iPhone Facts : Genuine Parts vs Non Genuine Parts

Genuine Parts vs Non Genuine Parts on iPhone

Apple genuine parts are the components that have been designed, tested, and manufactured by Apple or its authorised suppliers, intended to ensure the quality and performance standards of all Apple devices within its ecosystem.

Non-genuine parts are the components that have been sourced from other manufacturers not  by Apple or its authorised suppliers or salvaged from damaged devices. These parts, not certified or quality assured by Apple, carry certain risks and may not work properly with Apple devices.

Users can go to Settings > General > About to see if any of the parts in their iPhones have been replaced or are not functioning as expected.

Apple has also introduced a new feature, starting with iOS 15.2, that allows users to check the parts and service history of their iPhones. If a part has been replaced with a non-genuine Apple part, the user will see the user will see “Unknown Part” message indication

The feature also indicates through the device information, if the device has been updated by Apple after a service, safety analysis, or improvement of the device. This drastically affects the value of the device and its condition rating. Fortunately, this feature does not affect the user’s ability to continue using their device, its battery, display, or other components.

Apple recommends that users get their iPhones repaired by specially trained technicians using genuine parts. These providers include Apple,Apple Authorised Service Providers, and Independent Repair Providers, who have sole access to genuine Apple’s diagnostic tools and parts. Using non-genuine parts can also cause various issues with the iPhone’s features, such as Multi-Touch, Face ID, cellular connectivity, ultra wideband, and Apple Pay. This all on top of the risks of damaging other parts of the device, causing incorrect color calibration, reduced brightness, or faster battery depletion.

Moreover, non-genuine parts do not undergo the same stringent quality and safety testing as genuine Apple parts do. In some cases, they may also pose a risk of physical harm to the user or the device. For instance, certain incidents of non-genuine batteries have been reported to overheat, catch fire, or explode. For devices in warranty, non-genuine parts may also invalidate the warranty of the device or make it ineligible for future services by Apple.

Ultimately, it is always advisable for users to avoid non-genuine parts in their repairs for Apple devices and opt for genuine Apple parts instead. Genuine Apple parts can ensure the optimal performance and safety of their iPhones and preserve their value and functionality for a much longer time, benefitting both the user and the environment.
